Masterson’s Pub , located in the heart of Moonee Ponds , markets itself as a trendy “hipster” hangout , but my most recent experience at this establishment resulted in an experience I’d rather forget . While the bar may appear inviting from the outside , what I encountered behind its entrance was disgraceful and unfit for any venue.

From the moment I walked in , it was clear that upkeep was not a priority at this establishment . The surfaces were tacky , and a pungent odor of decaying beverages and filthy restrooms permeated the entire venue . Smelling a mixture of urine , a rotting odor and sickness . The main bar, which should be the focal point of any pub, was piled high with used mugs and refuse that looked like it had been ignored for a long time . The lavatory was in even more deplorable shape — spilling over , with a cracked flush mechanism and surfaces marked in what I can only assume was human excrement .
It wasn’t just a rare instance either. Based on the experiences shared online and speaking with locals , it seems that the state of cleanliness (or lack thereof) at this pub is a well-known flaw . Many guests have reported witnessing insects darting across the drink station and signs of rats in the basement . For a business that provides refreshments , these issues are utterly disgraceful additional information and raise serious concerns about the sanitation of anything they serve .
